It was taught to dancers and guests present at the event, including Guest of Honour NMP Viswa Sadasivan. The dance comprises simple moves from diverse genres, namely Hip Hop, Malay, Indian and Chinese dance forms. The dance was taught on May 26th to students at Evergreen Pri Sch. Team SDW 2011 felt that it would be an apt closing to Singapore Dance Week 2011.

Words of encouragement....
"I must say I was very impressed with the program of the launch of Singapore Dance Week. On the whole it represented at the best almost the whole spectrum of the young people across our society and yet acknowledged the pioneers who were the trail blazers.
It was good to have RI presenting a dance. It truly shows that they are after all, young, energetic and believe like any other young person that there is life beyond good grades.
Thank you for including OLN in the picture...."
Ms Agnes Chew, Principal, CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity
Students of CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity not only performed at the Opening event, they also created two impressive sculptures for presentation to our Dance Pioneers - Ms Rose Eberwein & Mdm Lee Shu Fen.
Title of the Sculptures: "Just Dance"
Artist Statement:

Move with the beat.
Enjoy the moment

SINGAPORE DANCE WEEK 2011 – A Very Memorable Opening
Little children from Leap Schoolhouse opened the performance segment with a piece that was "adorable and completely spontaneous with some contemporary elements of stillness!" to quote our MC Chan Sze Wei, who kept the audience regaled with her inimitable brand of spontaneity and wit. here is the video from Leap Schoolhouse http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=2093654298412&oid=110898125646296&comments |
Signature Mass Dance:
The creation of the SDW Signature Mass Dance opened the evening. Jackie Lee and Wen Ye coordinated this very special piece that brought together various dance forms – hip hop along with ethnic forms practised in Singapore. Dancers from the different genres lent their talents in creating this piece. Everyone joined in to learn and perform the piece together – GOH included! Over the week, the piece will be fine tuned, shared with school students and will be presented in its evolved state at the Closing at ION Orchard on May 28th.
Guest of Honour & Dance Pioneers:
Viswa Sadasivan encouraged us with his words: “… this has been essentially a ground-up initiative spearheaded by WDAS with active, enthusiastic participation from several dance groups. This sends the right signal – that dance belongs to us, the people”, admitting at the end of his speech that this occasion has given him, a 'closet dancer', a chance to dance! WDAS took the opportunity to honour two dance pioneers of Singapore, Ms Rose Eberwein and Mdm Lee Shu Fen, for their valuable contribution to Dance in Singapore. In appreciation, they were presented sculptures created by students of CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity by the Guest of Honour.
Performances:
The performances that followed by dancers from various dance groups, diverse genres, amateurs, professionals, young and older…. all reflected the vast landscape of Dance in Singapore. The common thread through it all was the Joy and Passion that each dancer brought to the space. It was touching as well as uplifting. The Singapore River providing the perfect backdrop, boats passing by in the background seemingly moving to the strains of the music, dance unfolding in the foreground… traditional dances, hip hop, contemporary Asian, street dance, Bollywood. The Marina Bay Sands as a silent yet imposing witness to it all.
There was this great sense of perfection - of being at the right place, at the right time and with all the right people. Dance brings joy and connects people in ways that nothing else can!

Singapore Dance Week 2011 – Connect…Share…Experience!
A Celebration of Dance organised by the World Dance Alliance Singapore
COME JOIN US AT...
the Opening on Saturday, May 21st 2011 at 5pm at One Fullerton
SDW 2011 will be officially launched by NMP Viswa Sadasivan
Singapore Dance Week, a week long celebration of Dance will open this Saturday, May 21st 2011 with "Connect…Share…Experience!" As the name suggests, Singaporeans will get up and experience the joy and verve of Dance. The venue for this opening event will be One Fullerton. This will be followed by a full week of dance happenings in various parts of the island in schools, community centres, dance studios and institutions etc. Singapore Dance Week 2011 will close on May 28th 2011 at ION Orchard.
For us Singapore Dance Week is a platform for connecting, sharing and experiencing dance together. The seed of this idea first found expression as International Dance Day in 2008. Each year, the idea has been developing – in 2009 WDAS celebrated International Dance Week. In 2010 the event morphed itself into Singapore Dance Week and was organised on a much larger scale than the previous years. This year, the event has received even more support from various segments of the community. We at WDAS look at Singapore Dance Week as an annual event which we see moving closer and closer each year towards the vision of taking Dance to the community.
It gives us great pleasure to have you join us in celebrating Dance at the Opening event this Saturday!
Warm Regards,
Nirmala Seshadri

SDW Signature Dance!
March 27th....
It's truly amazing what connecting and chatting with various people in the community can result in. Evergreen Primary School is celebrating Dance - as a part of SDW 2011 - by devoting one day on their school calendar to Dance! May 26th will be that day. That day, the entire school will experience dance through learning a community dance with simple moves from diverse dance genres that have been practised in Singapore. They will also view dance through performances by dance groups in Singapore as well through a short dance film.
I met up with the teacher in charge, the HOD of Aesthetics at Evergreen Ms Helen Shin, a few days ago. I was so taken by her interest and commitment to the concept of Dance Week. It is so heartening to listen to people like Helen and what they are doing to take SDW forward. It makes me feel that somewhere, somehow, what we are doing is right.
Anyway, Helen came up with this idea of a community dance and asked if our members at WDAS could help choreograph and teach it to their students. It was during our conversation that the possibility of a special signature SDW dance piece came to mind. That the piece that is taught to them can be the very same piece that opens and closes Dance Week this year. In any case Team SDW 2011 was working on having mass dances at the opening and closing events. So, why not this???
This special piece will be created on the spot at the Opening event at One Fullereton. It will be danced to the music of Singapore's very own fusion music group, Gammarays. By the way, Gammarays partnered us last year as well - a wonderful group of young and committed musicians who are not rejecting of their ethnic forms of music and yet daring in their explorations and compositions.
In the meantime, the Bollywood Mass Dance which will also be presented at the Opening event will soon be ready for public viewing on this very site.
More updates soon....

Countdown to Singapore Dance Week 2011
March 16th…. The countdown will begin soon. Singapore Dance Week 2011 here we come! First let me share some glimpses, fond memories of SDW 2010. Looking at these images, looking back… brings on the goose bumps. I cannot forget the magnificent setting. Merlion Park. May 22nd 2010. The first edition of Singapore Dance Week. What an evening. Each person who came to dance was simply amazing. The whole atmosphere was filled with excitement and passion for Dance. And as each group came on to dance, the sun slowly began to set. To the left, the Merlion… in the background the water and the imposing MBS. The setting sun. It was one of those ‘proud to belong to Singapore’ moments.
Fullerton Heritage has stepped in once again to sponsor the Opening event. They are not just our venue sponsors… they have become our friends. Just as so many others have. This is the thing about Dance Week. It connects dancers with people, people with dancers. And everyone to Dance.
Okay, here’s where we are now…Singapore Dance Week 2011 opens on May 21st at One Fullerton from 5- 6.30pm. Will tell you more about what we have planned so keep visiting us here. The week will be filled with activities in various places on our sunny land. And guess what, we’ve just fixed up the closing venue. ION ORCHARD on May 28th. Phew! Yay!
That’s it for now.. will be back with more SDW news.
Nirmala Seshadri
(Chairperson, SDW 2011)
