Singapore Dance Week - Chairperson's Message

Dear Friends

The World Dance Alliance, Singapore  (WDAS), is all set to celebrate International Dance Day 2010. The week long celebration of Dance will be called "Singapore Dance Week" in giving it a local flavour and a sense of identity. The primary aim of this event is to celebrate the joy and verve of Dance. For WDAS, Singapore Dance Week is a platform for connecting, sharing and experiencing dance together.

The opening event "Dance Singapore Dance!"will take place on May 22nd at the Merlion Park, One Fullerton at 6pm. Exciting highlights include a Zapin Aerobics demonstration, a live multi-cultural music and dance performance based on the Ramayana and a Dance Flash Mob, a sequence of simple dance moves, choreographed by younger members of WDAS, that will be taught on the spot to the general public. The music for this dance will be provided by the local Singaporean fusion Gammelan group, GammaRays. Students of dance from various schools and dance institutions in Singapore will join in the spontaneity and fun, capturing the spirit of Singapore Dance Week - to tap into the fundamental urge of every human  to dance. The official launch will be followed by an hour-long performance by dancers from different dance and ethnic backgrounds- a staging of dance works from the Chinese, Malay, Indian, Jazz, Hip Hop and Contemporary dance genres.

Singapore Dance Week will be officially launched at the Merlion Park by Viswa Sadasivan, Nominated Member of Parliament. We invite you to come and share in the joy and passion for Dance.

See you there on May 22nd!

Nirmala Seshadri
Chairperson
Singapore Dance Week 2010
